In this ELA  From the Heart: Poetry Club, your child will discover the wonderful art of poetry and how the structure of language can be creatively manipulated when their poetic brain takes over.

Poetry, crafted and expressed from the heart, opens limitless possibilities for children to reach deeply into places within their soul that are often difficult to access, allowing for authentic and genuine self-expression. With the help of a beautiful blend of  sometimes fewer, sometimes more words, poetry helps them say what they need even when it doesn’t quite make traditional sense.

Our tools will be pencil, paper and Write Your Own Poems workbook by Jerome Martin of the Usborne series.

We will create a class rhythm by starting with a  contemplative mindfulness first minutes, a check in circle and then we will set

on a quest to find out what tickles our hearts, what inspires us, what moves us, what makes us angry, what makes us sad, what makes us indifferent, and what brings kindness to our life.

What can the realm of dreams and hopes make us express on paper?

  • Haikus
  • Rhymes
  • Limericks
  • Sonnets
  • Pantoums
  • Odes

We will also be analyzing famous poems, learning about certain authors, and gathering inspiration from the masters.

I have always wanted to start a Poetry Club. I believe poetry's mechanism can bypass what makes us weary and hardens our hearts.

Inspiring children to use poetic language can help them grow inward and they will learn to discern all those feelings that come and go.

This nurturing environment encourages young writers to explore and develop their unique voice while supporting their emotional growth.

At the end of the semester, I will encourage the children to share their poems during our Open Mic day.

It will be a sweet, sweet class.
