I know there will never be any changes to the query, but since the instance is about to be replaced I'm thinking about saving the query to a file and pointing the new instance to that file. Is there any benefit to doing this? A: Without knowing the query specifically, I'm assuming you want to prevent yourself from having to write it out every time? If so, it sounds like a good idea. Is the query executed daily, or weekly, or monthly? I do something similar, but I write the query out to a file using a batch file that I run each week. So I can point the new database to that file and keep the old one from being modified. I'd just like to point out that it's not as easy as "saving it to a file". The query will still need to be parsed by the SQL Server process and it will still be running on the database server. Of course, if you're the only user of the database, or if you're on a fast enough server that there's no noticeable delay in it running, that may not matter much to you. But if you're looking to take a shortcut, you'll need to look at some "I'm saving it to a file" (or a database) solutions before thinking of the SQL Server side of things. For a little more info on that, search SO for "sql server [data access or programming]" and look at some of the first answers.
